Fairy Spoons
The fairy spoons began as a challenge, what is the smallest spoon that I can make that is still a 'perfectly' formed spoon. they began with the bowl the size of a 2 pence piece and now I am down to the size of a 5 pence piece.
I decided to make these into necklaces because I found it calming to rub my thumb in the bowl of the spoon, in the same way I find a smooth stone picked up from the beach calming to rub. These spoons are made from Yew and Laburnum because of the beautiful wood but also because of the tightness of the grain.
To carve my fairy spoons I use nearly all the same tools as for my larger eating spoons. I still use my hand hatchet to carefully axe out the blank. The only difference is the size of the hook knife for carving the bowl.
